History of Guwahati
In the famous epic, Mahabharata, Guwahati was the capital of the demon king named Narakasura of Pragijyotispura who was annihilated by Lord Krishna.Hence was also known as Pragijyotishpura or 'Light of the East'. It was also known as 'Kamarupa' or the ancient land where fertility, God of beauty and source of creativity orginated. Even today, the administrative district of Kamrup is a living testimony of its ancient history.
